First day box office collection: This subgenre of courtroom dramas has given movie audiences plenty of memorable films. After watching Karan Singh Tyagi’s Kesari Chapter 2 and Subhash Kapoor’s Jolly LLB 3, the Indian audience now has a third film that belongs to the same category, which is Supan Varma directed by Supan Varma. Starring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam, the film has grossed Rs 1.65 crore on its first day, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
Inspired by the landmark case of Shah Bano Begum v Muhammad Ahmad Khan, the story follows a divorced woman who sues her ex-husband when he refuses financial support. Although the case is well known, and the film is getting good reviews, audiences have not yet welcomed the film with open arms. On opening day, the film only had about 1,800 screenings across the country. Occupancy rates were low throughout the day, averaging 9.97%. The morning and afternoon shows achieved rates of 5.66% and 8.19%. Evening and night show seats 9.54% and 16.5% full, respectively.
The opening day collection of Haq is quite similar to that of Vivek Agnihotri’s The Bengal Files, which grossed Rs 1.75 crore on its first day. At the end of its theatrical run, Agnihotri made just Rs 16 crore.
