The Ukai Dam in 2025 will generate 541.467 million units of hydropower, the highest level in the past five years, according to an official.
Deputy Executive Engineer of Ukai Dam, Mayank Rathod, said: “The water stock in Ukai Dam is sufficient for the annual needs for irrigation and drinking purposes of the SMC and Hazira industries. This year, 541.467 million units of power was generated through hydropower generation, which is the highest.”
An official at Ukai Dam said that the beginning of the monsoon season marks the beginning of the inflow of water from the upper catchment areas of the dam, which began on June 18, 2025. The water storage in the dam – as recorded on June 18, 2025 – was 314.63 feet (3,111.44 million cubic metres). The dam authorities started reading and generating hydroelectric power units from September 18 onwards.
Sources say that during the monsoon season, the authorities release the water keeping in mind the current water level in the dam and the inflow of water from the upper catchment areas of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
There are four hydropower units – each with a capacity of 75 MW – which start operating as water is released from the dam.
Sources say the water flowing from the dam reaches the Tapi River – passing through Surat city center – and eventually meets seawater at Domas.
On some days during the middle of the monsoon season, hydropower generation stops due to low water flow. The hydro units closed on November 9, 2025.

Ukai Dam officials said that 541.467 million units of power was generated through the discharge of 9,725.95 million cubic metres.
According to figures obtained from Ukai Dam authorities, the hydropower capacity generated during the monsoon season in 2023 was 213,218 MW, followed by 391,580 MW in 2024 and 541,467 MW in 2025.
Sources say that the daily consumption of water by the Surat Municipal Corporation for drinking purposes for the citizens of Surat amounts to 1,500 million dinars.
