For those who enjoy clear skies and cool weather, expect a fun weekend. Night temperatures dropped a full degree – from 13.7°C on Thursday to 12.7°C on Friday – setting a new record for the season. Bashan recorded the lowest temperature of the season in the city, 12.3 degrees Celsius.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed that the temperature is likely to drop further and may reach 11 degrees Celsius on Monday. People should take precautions against the cold and enjoy the winter, says Dr Anupam Kashyapi, former chief meteorologist and crop advisor at IMD.
Daytime temperatures, which have remained stable at around 30°C so far, have also started to drop, partly making the city cooler. Between Thursday and Friday, the maximum temperature in Shivajinagar dropped from 30.2 degrees Celsius to a marginally lower 29.8 degrees Celsius. Temperatures are expected to reach 29 degrees Celsius on Sunday and Monday.

In the district, Talegaon and Malin were the most chilly, with the temperature dropping to around 11 degrees Celsius. The cold of winter has set in across the state, with lower than normal low temperatures. Jalgaon remains the coldest place in the state at 9 degrees Celsius and the only one to have a single-digit reading. On November 10, this district in northern Maharashtra recorded its first single-digit minimum temperature of the season at 9.6 degrees Celsius. The Met Office says there is a possibility of an isolated cold wave in north and northeastern Maharashtra in the coming days.
“One reason for the cold is that the sky has been clear since the start of the southwest monsoon,” says Kashyapi. “A clear sky allows the sun’s radiation, which warms the Earth’s surface during the day, to escape quickly in the evening and night, resulting in a significant drop in temperature.”
Northerly winds, blowing across the western Himalayan region, such as Jammu Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, carry hail to many states of north and central India, including Maharashtra. “The third reason for feeling colder is because it’s dry weather that doesn’t trap moisture,” says Casciapi.
On the other hand, the Western Disturbance – a cyclonic circulation of upper air – which brings winter rains and snow to Kashmir has weakened and is expected to shift towards the east, increasing the possibility of a dip in night temperatures.
