As fatal accidents continue to occur near Navali Bridge on Mumbai-Bangalore Road despite precautionary and safety measures, the authorities on Friday decided to take further steps including setting up a checkpoint, reducing speed restrictions to 40 kmph, creating a dedicated lane for heavy vehicles on the accident-prone stretch as well as creating awareness among drivers on taking care while driving.
Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram held a high-level meeting of officials of Pune Municipal Corporation, PMRDA and NHAI as well as city police officers.
Measures to be implemented on the stretch include setting up a checkpoint on the accident-prone stretch to check speed, checking loads of heavy vehicles at the Khed Shivapur toll point, screening drivers to avoid drinking and driving, providing a dedicated lane for heavy vehicles and restricting their speed limit to a maximum of 40 kmph, barricading existing narrow-width roads to slow down traffic, working on vehicles parked on service roads, putting up more signage and using speed guns along the road.

Thick partitions will also be installed on the roads and land demarcation for widening service roads will begin within a week, Ram said.
PMC will complete the acquisition of lands to expand service roads within six months, and the ongoing works will be completed within six months. A new bridge on Mutha River will be opened by March 2026 by NHAI and an emergency assistance center will be set up near Navale Bridge.
As a permanent solution, a six-lane elevated road from Jambhulwadi to Tathawade will be constructed along with a new tunnel on the accident-prone stretch.
Several fatal accidents have occurred on the stretch near Navale Bridge over the past few years. On Thursday, eight people were killed when a container vehicle lost control and collided with several vehicles on the road.
