D2M Technology: There is good news for lovers of watching Bollywood movies, TV shows and live sports on the phone. Just like you enjoy TV channels at home without internet, you will be able to enjoy the same on your mobile phone. This will be possible through direct to mobile i.e. D2M technology.
Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology sends signals from satellites and broadcast towers directly to mobile phones. This means that mobile data and Wi-Fi are not required to watch videos. In such a situation, this technique will prove beneficial in weak networks and expensive internet areas.
About D2M Technology
The Ministry of Communications has mentioned many special features of D2M. D2M technology delivers multimedia content to mobile phones. This technology is made for mobile only and delivers content without any interruption. This is hybrid broadcasting. That means this technology is also capable of providing real-time and on-demand content. This facility will be available in feature phones priced between Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000. With D2M technology the mobile will work like a TV.
It will cost so many crores of rupees
HMD and Lava are making feature phones with satellite connectivity in India. Its price will be around Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500. For this, Saankhya Labs’ chipset will be used in the phones. This technique will be applicable all over India.
Initially, Prasar Bharati content will be streamed on these devices. There is news that in future D2M technology can also be connected to smartphones. Sankhya Labs merged with Tejas Networks last year. This technology is like D2H.
Trials have started
Trials of this technology have already been done in Delhi and Bengaluru. There is a plan to test it in about 36 cities in the next six to nine months. If everything goes according to planning, then this technology can be rolled out in the entire country.
Benefits of D2M technology
Through this, the government can also send important announcements, weather alerts, emergency alerts and public announcements. This technology will prove helpful in connecting millions more people in rural and remote areas. Experts estimate that spreading D2M network across India could cost around Rs 8,000 crore. But telecom companies are against this technique. Because this may harm the sales of their data packs.
IIT Kanpur had stated in a report released in 2022 that existing mobile devices do not support D2M technology. To make these devices compatible, a separate baseband processing unit will be required. You will also need an antenna, low-noise amplifier, baseband filter and a receiver.
