The Pune City Police detained a man for allegedly posing as an IPS officer while visiting various places including the Pune Police Commissionerate.
Police have identified the accused as Sagar Waghmode, aged around 30 and residing in Nerul in Navi Mumbai.
An FIR in this case was registered at Bundgarden police station on October 31 based on a complaint by Bhavik Shah (37), who works in juvenile management.
The police said that the accused had been in contact with the complainant who posed as an IPS officer for about three years. They visited various places together where the accused claimed to have made contact with senior police officials. The accused also visited the Income Tax office and the Pune Police Commissioner, police said.
Recently, during a visit to the Police Commissionerate, the accused allegedly claimed to be a batchmate of the IPS officer, who is currently serving as Deputy Commissioner (DCP) of Pune City Police.
However, when the Director of Public Prosecutions learned of the matter, he clarified that the accused was not his batchmate. Subsequently, the accused was reported to Bundgarden Police Station and an FIR was lodged against him.
“The accused has not been arrested yet. The investigation is ongoing. We have issued a notice to the accused, who is known to be a resident of Mumbai. He was coming to Pune by posing as an IPS officer. Prima facie, it is learned that he was booked for a similar offense of impersonation a few years ago,” said Assistant Police Inspector Shivshant Khos, investigating officer.
The police suspect that the accused was preparing for competitive exams in the past, but were unable to acquit him. The police detained the accused under Sections 204 (impersonation of public servant) and 319 (2) (cheating by impersonation) Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
