Apple will reportedly need Google’s help to roll out its widely anticipated, AI-powered version of Siri.
The iPhone’s flagship voice assistant appears to be “based” on Google’s Gemini AI model, and is rumored to come with an AI-powered web search feature that’s also powered by Gemini integration, according to the latest “Power On” newsletter from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.
The revamped version of Siri is expected to roll out in March 2026. However, “there is no guarantee that users will adopt it, that it will work seamlessly or that it can undo years of damage to the Siri brand,” Gorman wrote.
As part of the deal with Apple, Google is said to be developing a custom Gemini-based model that could run on previous Private Cloud Compute servers to run Siri. But this does not mean that Siri will include Google services or Gemini features. This just means that the custom Gemini model will be running in the background, powering various AI features that users can access via Siri.
At WWDC 2024, Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence — a set of artificial intelligence features — and announced a revamped Siri powered by ChatGPT. However, the app’s rollout has been slow, features are limited, and a promised Siri update has been delayed to 2026.
This only widened the gap between Apple and its counterparts from the seven major technology companies in the world. Once the world’s most valuable technology company, Apple now holds second place behind Nvidia. During the company’s recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said they are “making good progress” on Siri’s revamped AI platform and that they are “open to pursuing mergers and acquisitions if we believe it will advance our roadmap.”
Along with Siri, Gorman revealed that Apple may soon launch a new smart home display product with speaker base and wall mount options. The Apple TV and HomePod mini will reportedly help showcase new Siri and Apple Intelligence features next year.
