A man from Bihar was detained at Bengaluru airport after Rs 46 lakh was stolen in cyber crimes

Uttara Kannada CEN police on Friday arrested a former ‘cyber-slave’ for continuing to assault a 47-year-old businessman in Karnataka.

The arrested person has been identified as Shah Alam, 23, from Bihar, and was arrested when he came to collect Rs 40 lakh from the victim at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. The accused was sent to police custody for seven days.

According to a police officer, the victim, a resident of Uttara Kannada district, found a profile named Aishani on nikhaforever.com, a matrimonial portal exclusively for Muslims.

The officer also said, “Alam was then working in Cambodia as a cyber-slave and was part of an eight-member team. Assuming Alam to be Ishaani, the victim befriended him on the portal in May. Between June 21 and July 23, the victim transferred a huge sum of Rs 36 lakh for trading and as a gift to Ishaani.”

“But Alam was not happy that he did not get his incentive and even his salary of $600, and he decided to leave the place. But it was not easy, as he was in the clutches of cybercrime kingpins. Because of his ‘performance’, he was given a half-day excursion. Using it, Alam reached the Indian embassy, informed the officials about his ordeal and returned to India with the intervention of the Ministry of External Affairs.”

But after returning to India, Alam allegedly bought another SIM card and continued chatting with the Uttara Kannada man in the guise of Ishani. The victim continued to transfer money and send gifts whenever Aishani requested it. “In one case, Alam came to Hyderabad airport claiming to be Aishani’s servant to receive a MacBook sent by the victim through his handler,” the police officer said.

By August, the victim became suspicious and filed a complaint with the Uttara Kannada CEN police station.

P Ashwini, Deputy Superintendent of Uttara Kannada Police Station CEN, who led the investigation, asked the victim to continue chatting with the accused to trap him. By then, the police discovered that it was Alam who was deceiving the victim under the mask of Aishani.

Meanwhile, Alam, impersonating Aishani, told the businessman that Rs 40,000 was needed “for her mother’s treatment”. This time, the police asked the victim to ask Ishani to come to Bengaluru herself or send her maid to Kempegowda International Airport to receive the money.

“We checked the names of people who were arriving in Bengaluru from other cities and there was only one person with the name Alam. While Ishani told the victim that her ‘maid’ was coming from Hyderabad, the police discovered that Alam was actually coming from Delhi,” said a police officer, who was part of the investigation.

After Alam arrived at Bengaluru airport, the Uttara Kannada district police arrested him.

“We checked the IP address and other details and Alam was already in Cambodia working and cheating many Indians from there. In all, the victim lost Rs 46 lakh,” Ashwini said.
