Police sources said that security measures have been strengthened near major public places. “We have tightened security in and around Eden Gardens and the hotel where the international cricketers are staying for the India-South Africa Test scheduled later this week,” a senior state police officer said.
Police in Kolkata said the tightened measures include more frequent patrols, increased checks at transit hubs, and close coordination with central agencies. Officers were also instructed to monitor sensitive sites and events, and to check the identities of employees in public places and hotels.
“Keeping in mind the emergency situation, a rapid response team has been formed to rush in case of any emergency. All departments have been put on high alert and advised to maintain strict security vigil on all trains,” the Eastern Railway said.

The Kolkata Metro Rail Authority also issued a separate alert on Monday, paying special attention to metro stations across the city.
The explosion sparked immediate political reactions, with TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee demanding the resignation of Federal Home Minister Amit Shah. “For the safety and dignity of our nation, Amit Shah must step down from his post as Home Minister. His continuous failures and inability to ensure peace and security have severely shaken people’s confidence. India deserves a capable Home Minister who can truly protect its citizens and keep the nation safe.”
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and sadness over the incident. “I am deeply shocked to hear about the tragic explosion in New Delhi. My heart goes out to the families who lost their loved ones, and I pray for strength and a speedy recovery for all those injured,” she wrote on social media.
