The Karkardooma Court in Delhi on Thursday granted interim bail to Umar Khalid, an accused in the 2020 North-East Delhi riots conspiracy case, for 14 days from December 16 to December 29. Khalid had sought the relief to attend his sister’s wedding, scheduled for December 27.
The court granted the interim bail with certain conditions. The court said that Umar Khalid will have to surrender to the concerned jail authorities on the evening of December 29, 2025, along with the other accused lodged in the same jail, who will then submit a report to the court. During the bail period, he cannot leave Delhi-NCR and must share his mobile number.

The court also said that during the interim bail period, he can meet his family members, students, and friends. He will also be allowed to attend a marriage ceremony at his home or elsewhere.
Reacting to Umar Khalid’s bail, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said it was shocking that he had to wait five years for 13 days of parole to attend his sister’s wedding, while convicts like Gurmeet Singh, convicted of rape and murder, are repeatedly granted parole.
In a post on X, Mufti said, “It is tragic and shocking that Umar Khalid had to wait five years to get 13 days of parole to attend his sister’s wedding, while convicts like Gurmeet Singh, convicted of rape and murder, are repeatedly granted parole. The contradiction is glaring. This disparity highlights the disturbing inconsistency and bias in our justice system.”
Umar Khalid has been in jail since September 2020 in the alleged ‘larger conspiracy’ case related to the February 2020 Delhi riots. He is being prosecuted under various sections of the UAPA as well as serious sections of the Indian Penal Code and has not yet received regular bail in this case.
