Mumbai’s major municipal hospitals Sion, KEM and Nair continued to provide patient care and emergency services on Monday despite a state-wide strike by the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD). The agitating doctors are demanding justice for the 28-year-old doctor who died by suicide at Phaltan in Satara.
The administrative and operational attendance report signed by the dean shows that operations at the hospitals remained mostly unaffected, although two hospitals reported partial staffing shortages.
Sion Ho Hospital appeared to be the least affected, with all categories of medical staff reporting for duty.
Of the 999 positions subject to sanctions, 986 were filled and no resident doctors joined the strike.
Junior residents, diploma holders, super-specialty staff, bonded posts, and senior residents were present, allowing the hospital to run regular and emergency services without interruption.
KEM Hospital reported that 62 out of 1,118 filled positions were on strike and 182 employees were on leave, leaving 874 on duty.
Absences were primarily among junior residents, although most senior and bonded positions continued to manage clinical responsibilities.
