Rohit Sharma: Team India’s veteran player and former captain Rohit Sharma has made a big revelation while remembering the pain of the defeat against Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Rohit told that after this defeat, he had even considered retirement, because he was feeling completely empty mentally and physically.
It is noteworthy that in this mega event, the Indian team had reached the final brilliantly. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the team had won 10 consecutive matches just before the final. But the defeat at the hands of Australia in the title match had shattered the dreams of millions of people. Rohit scored 597 runs in the tournament and batted at an excellent average of 54.27.
‘I was completely devastated’
Speaking at an event recently, Rohit spoke openly about the emotional situation after India’s defeat. He said that it was a difficult time for him because after becoming the captain in 2022, he had given everything in this World Cup. “My only goal was to win the World Cup… so when that didn’t happen, I was completely devastated,” he said. “There was no energy left in my body.” It took me a few months to control myself and stand again.
Rohit Sharma admitted that even though he had to prepare himself quickly for the 2024 T20 World Cup, the pain of defeat was so deep that he felt there was nothing left to give.
‘I had already thought of retirement’
Rohit told that the disappointment of defeat in the World Cup was so much that he even thought of taking retirement from cricket. He said, “At one point I really thought I didn’t want to play this game anymore because it had taken everything away from me and I felt like I had nothing left.” However, later he returned to the game thinking about himself and with strong intentions.
‘Life does not end here…’
The Indian opening batsman said, “I think when you invest so much in something and don’t get the desired result, it is a natural reaction. Same thing happened with me too. But I also knew that life does not end here. It was a big lesson for me to deal with disappointment, prepare myself and start afresh. I knew there was T20 World Cup, I focused on that. It is easy to say this now, but at that time It was extremely difficult.”
