In a major jolt to the Congress just three days before the election results, former Union minister and former MP Shakeel Ahmed on Tuesday resigned from the party’s primary membership soon after polling for the second and final phase ended.
“Though I had taken the decision to resign from the party at some point, I did not want to resign before the polls for the last phase as it could have affected the party,” Ahmed, former president of the Bihar Congress and one of the most prominent Muslim leaders of the Congress in Bihar, told The Indian Express. In response to a question about specific reasons for his move, Ahmed said: “I did not participate in the decision-making process at any stage.” Asked whether his resignation had anything to do with Krishna Alavaru, the IAC in-charge of Bihar, or Bihar state president Rajesh Kumar, Ahmed said: “Who else? They were in the saddle. I was not consulted on any issue…but I will not join any party.”
In his resignation letter to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Shakeel Ahmed wrote: “With a heavy heart, I have decided to resign from the membership of the Congress Party. My resignation does not mean that I will join another party. In fact, I have no intention of doing so. Like my predecessors, I have complete faith in the ideology and principles of the Congress Party, and I will forever remain a supporter of these ideologies and principles. I can assure you that the last vote of my life will also go to the Congress.”
