Spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin’s preparations to become the first Indian player to play in Australia’s Big Bash League have been halted after the 39-year-old suffered an injury setback recently in Chennai.
Ashwin’s side, Sydney Thunder, confirmed on Tuesday that the Tamil Nadu player underwent surgery after injuring his knee while training in his home city. With no set timeline for recovery, Ashwin had to abandon the entire BBL|15 campaign.
In September 2025, the Thunder announced that the 39-year-old had committed for the entire BBL season. The club said it is, however, hopeful of bringing Ashwin into the squad in a non-playing capacity.
“Everyone at Sydney Thunder was devastated to learn of Ash’s knee injury which ruled him out of BBL|15, and we wish him well in his recovery,” Thunder general manager Trent Copeland said in a statement.
“From the first moment we spoke with Ash, his commitment to the Thunder was clear. We hope to welcome him into our dugout for part of BBL|15, introduce him to our fans at events and build a long-term relationship.”
“Despite the club’s disappointment, we have built two championship-contending teams and expect to continue to progress in recent seasons in the WBBL|11 and BBL|15. We can’t wait to get back in front of our Western Sydney fans for two huge campaigns.”
“devoured”
Ashwin said he felt sad to miss the opportunity. He added: “My focus now is to recover and come back stronger.”
“I am grateful to the Thunder family and fans for the warmth they have already shown me. Trent and the entire management have made me feel part of the club from our first conversation.

“I will watch every match (probably at odd hours in Chennai) and cheer for both the women’s and men’s teams. If we agree on rehabilitation and travel, and only if the doctors are happy, I would like to be there later in the season and say hello in person.”
The veteran retired from international cricket last December during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test tour of Australia before announcing his retirement from the Indian Premier League in August.
