India wins Women’s World Cup 2025: PM Narendra Modi hails ‘stunning win’ | Cricket news

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian team for winning the Women’s World Cup for the first time in its history. India beat South Africa by 52 runs at the DY Patel Stadium in the final, which extended into the early hours of Monday morning and thus won the trophy for the first time in history.

“A stunning win for the Indian team in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. Their performance in the final was characterized by great skill and confidence. The team showed exceptional teamwork and perseverance throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our players. This historic win will motivate future champions to take up the sport,” Prime Minister Modi said in his post. #WomensWorldCup2025″.

A moment in time for Indian cricket

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur ended the final on a fitting note with an incredible catch on the shoulder of a running back, which was also the fifth wicket of Deepti Sharma, the latter having scored a crucial half-century earlier in the day. Shafali Verma, who was left out of the team throughout the tournament and returned for the semi-finals due to an injury to Pratika Rawal, was India’s top run-scorer that night and then took two crucial wickets as well.

Shafali’s blistering target of 87 was followed by combative knocks from Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh before South Africa rallied to limit India to a low of 298/7. Deepti’s run-a-ball 58 with three fours and a six and Richa (34 off 24 balls, 3x4s, 2x6s) provided the much-needed late impetus with a 47-run partnership for the sixth wicket after India’s innings faltered in the middle with Jemima Rodrigues (24) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (20) failing to convert their starts.

This was the second time India had reached the final, having finished as runners-up in 2017. India came back from several setbacks throughout the tournament. Several times in the tournament they were on the verge of elimination. Three consecutive defeats in the league stage, a sharp result combined for series winners Australia and the defiant South African captain, Laura Wolfhardt, and they had several moments close to the end. But they believed, fought and won.
