NASA Spacewalk Postponed 2026 : US space agency NASA has postponed the spacewalk scheduled outside the International Space Station (ISS) on January 8, 2026. This decision has been taken due to the health problem of a crew member.
According to NASA, a crew member suffered health issues on the space station on Wednesday afternoon. Due to confidentiality, NASA has not released the name of the crew member or further information about the problem. The agency said that the situation is stable and there is no danger.
maintenance work had to be done
This spacewalk was to perform some maintenance and upgrade work outside the ISS. Now NASA will announce the new date later. NASA has given priority to the safety of the crew, hence such a decision was taken. Such situations sometimes arise in space missions and NASA is always alert. More updates are expected soon.
What is spacewalk?
According to the American space agency NASA, whenever an astronaut exits a spacecraft in space, it is called a spacewalk. Spacewalk is also technically called Extravehicular Activity (EVA) from Russia. The first spacewalk took place on March 18, 1965, which was 10 minutes long. The first person to perform a spacewalk was Alexey Leonov of Russia. Apart from this, the first American person to do a spacewalk was Ed White, who did a spacewalk during the Gemini 4 mission on June 3, 1965. Ed White’s spacewalk was 23 minutes.
Why do astronauts do space walks?
According to NASA, astronauts can work outside their spacecraft while in space. In such a situation, during spacewalk, astronauts use science to test new equipment. Apart from this, he also comes out of the spacecraft to repair the spacecraft. For spacewalks, astronauts wear space suits so that they do not have trouble breathing.
How difficult is it to do a spacewalk?
Astronauts have to put on spacesuits hours before they go on a spacewalk. These spacesuits are filled with oxygen. After wearing it, he breathes oxygen so that the nitrogen present in his body comes out. If nitrogen does not come out of the body, it can prove costly for them. While traveling in space, gas bubbles may form in the body of astronauts. Because of this, astronauts may experience pain in elbows, shoulders, wrists and knees. Let us tell you that this pain is called bends.
Safety is taken care of during spacewalk
During spacewalks, astronauts use safety tethers to stay close to their spacecraft. Tethers are like ropes, one end of which is connected to the astronaut’s spacesuit and the other to the spacecraft. Apart from this, another way to stay safe during spacewalk is to wear a safe. It is worn like a backpack.
