Rise up, Sir Bix! The most important professional achievements of David Beckham

David Beckham will be knighted by King Charles on Tuesday in a ceremony at Windsor Castle.

Beckham’s services to football and charity were mentioned in the King’s Birthday Honors List earlier this year, and are the basis for him receiving a knighthood.

Here, we take a look at the former Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain player’s career highlights.

Manchester United

Beckham was a member of the infamous Class of 92, and began his career with United in 1992.

Four years later, he won the first of his six Premier League titles, as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side finished four points clear of Newcastle in 1996.

He won more local titles in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003. Beckham scored 11 goals in the successful 2003 season, his last season with United.

His best season in front of goal came during the previous season – 2001/2002 – when he scored 16 times.

In terms of trophies, Beckham’s peak at Old Trafford came in 1999 when the club won the treble, becoming the first English club to do so.

The Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich, as well as the FA Cup, were added to that year’s Premier League title.

Beckham won two FA Cups during his time with United as well as four Community Shields. To this day, he holds the record for the most direct free kicks in Premier League history with 18.

In the summer of 2003, Beckham left his boyhood club to become a Galactico at Real Madrid. During his four-year spell in the Spanish capital, he failed to reach the same silverware levels he achieved during his time at United.

In 2007, Beckham’s final season at the club, Real Madrid captured the La Liga title. The only other trophy won during the English manager’s tenure was the Spanish Super Cup in 2003.

Beckham scored 20 goals for Real Madrid, but did not exceed double figures in a single season in the league.

Los Angeles Galaxy

After the end of the 2006/2007 season, Beckham moved from Madrid to Los Angeles, where he moved to Major League Soccer.

He spent six seasons with the LA Galaxy, winning the MLS Cup twice. Los Angeles has also won the Supporters’ Shield – the award given to the team that tops the regular season standings – twice with Beckham. He scored 20 MLS goals during his time in the United States.

Milan & Paris Saint-Germain

While in Los Angeles, Beckham twice returned to Europe with loan spells with Milan. At the time of the first loan, the move was thought to be aimed at maintaining match fitness for England’s World Cup qualifiers in 2009.

Beckham played 33 matches for Milan and scored two goals. One of his most noteworthy matches came against Manchester United during the 2010 Champions League – his first appearance against his former club. United won the two-legged matches with a score of 5-2 on aggregate.

Beckham ultimately missed the 2010 World Cup finals after rupturing his Achilles tendon while playing for Milan.

In 2013, after completing his studies in Los Angeles, Beckham spent the latter half of the European season at Paris Saint-Germain. He won his fourth different Ligue 1 winner’s medal as Paris Saint-Germain captured the Ligue 1 title.

He retired from professional football after five months in Paris.

England

The man who would become England captain made his debut for his country in 1996, appearing in a World Cup qualifier against Moldova.

He featured at the 1998 World Cup where he was infamously sent off when Argentine Diego Simeone was sent off during England’s round of 16 exit.

Beckham also appeared in the 2000 and 2004 European Championships, as well as the 2002 and 2006 World Cup finals. In 2000, he was appointed England captain by caretaker manager Peter Taylor before Sven-Goran Eriksson kept him in the position.

Arguably Beckham’s most famous moment as England captain came in 2001 when he converted a 93rd-minute free-kick that secured an equalizer against Greece, a result that sent England to the 2002 World Cup.

Finally, Beckham was captain of his country’s national team for six years. He played 115 international matches and scored 17 goals.
