Rs 51 lakh in cash seized from EOW police officer detained in Rs 2 crore bribery case | Pune News

ACB sleuths caught the accused, identified as Assistant Police Inspector Pramod Ravindra Chintamani, on Sunday red-handed in accepting Rs 46.5 lakh as part of the first installment of the bribe he demanded.

He was produced before a court in Pune on Monday. Deputy Superintendent of Police Dayanand Jawadi of ACB said the court ordered Chintamani to be remanded in police custody till November 6 for further investigation.

“We seized money worth Rs 51,000 during the search of his house. His movable and immovable properties are being investigated,” Javadi said.

Chintamani, 35, has been attached to the economic crimes wing of Pimpri Chinchwad police. The ACB took action against him after receiving a complaint from a 48-year-old lawyer. According to ACB, an offense was registered against the lawyer-client at Bavdhan police station this year under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 316 (2), 316 (5), 318 (4), 336 (2), 338, 339, 3 (5). A press release stated that the client’s father was also arrested in this crime.

Chintamani was the investigating officer in this case.

As stated in the press release issued by ACB, Chintamani allegedly demanded Rs 2 lakh from the lawyer to assist his client and provide an ‘opinion’ in favor of the bail application filed by the client’s father in the said case.

But later he allegedly suddenly increased the bribe amount from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2 crore. The ACB press release said that Chintamani demanded a bribe of Rs 1 crore for himself and the remaining Rs 1 crore for a senior police inspector in his department. He also allegedly asked the lawyer to pay the down payment of Rs 50 lakh as soon as possible.

But the ACB team laid a trap and caught Chintamani accepting Rs 46.5 lakh as part of the first installment of Rs 50 lakh from the lawyer at the Untadya Maruti temple in Pune’s Rasta Peth area on Sunday.

A first information report (FIR) has been lodged against Chintamani at Samarth police station in Pune, under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Subsequently, an ACB team raided his house during investigation.
