Sharad Pawar’s NCP joins hands with Ajit Pawar’s NCP in Chandgad Nagar panchayat elections

Days after NCP chief Sharad Pawar asked his party leaders to cooperate with other parties except the BJP in the local self-government body elections, the two factions of the NCP, in a first of its kind, joined hands in the Chandgad Nagar panchayat elections. The Congress, the Congress’s (SP) coalition partner, said this was bound to happen in the assembly polls conducted by local self-governing bodies.

The anti-poll alliance, which is scheduled to go to polls next month, was announced by NCP leader and Mahayoti Minister Hassan Musharraf in Kolhapur on Monday. Musharraf spoke at the press conference in the presence of NCP leader Nandathai Bhabholkar and NCP’s Rajesh Patel. They earlier held a meeting in Gadinglag where they decided to form their alliance Chahar Vikas Aghadi.

Speaking on the occasion, Bhabholkar and Patel said they came together on the basis of progressive ideology. On the other hand, Rajesh Patel said that many Congress leaders will join the party.

Musharraf expressed his satisfaction with the union of the two factions and said: “Our unity will ensure our victory in the Nagar Panchayat elections. There are other parties and leaders who are ready to join hands with us.”
The alliance comes at a time of fierce competition between them at the state level.

Reacting to this development, Congress MLC Satej Patel said: “It is not a big problem. Such alliances will happen in the local self-government body polls. In fact, it has already happened in several places in the state, but since Musharraf held the press conference, everyone has become aware of it.”

In 2023, Ajit Pawar broke away from his uncle and formed a separate group of 40 MLAs. He then joined hands with the BJP and Shiv Sena to form Mahayoti. The Election Commission later recognized Ajit Pawar’s group and gave it the party’s identity and symbol. The group led by Sharad Pawar was given the name NCP (SP). Since then, the two have fought elections, including the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, against each other across the state.

At the NCP’s core committee meeting on Sunday, Sharad Pawar urged party leaders to join hands with like-minded parties, except the BJP. He also asked the party to field indigenous OBC candidates in seats reserved for OBCs. He said that wherever OBC candidates are not available, Kunbi certificates should be sent from there, the party leader said.
