The second round of the Chess World Cup 2025 begins on Tuesday at the Rio Resort Convention Center in Goa, with 17 Indian players still in the competition. The top fifty players, including eight Indians, received a bye into the opening round. The second round will also see the return of top seed and current world champion, D. Gokesh, India’s No. 1 Arjun Erejesi and third seed R. Prajnananda.

A total of 24 Indians were part of the 206-player field. After seven teams were eliminated from the first round, 17 teams remain in the race for the title.

The opening round saw the exit of defending Women’s World Cup champion Divya Deshmukh, the only female player in the event. Five Indian players were eliminated after the classic matches, with two more eliminated after the tie-breaks.

The second round of the 2025 FIDE World Cup will take place from 4 to 6 November (including the play-offs), followed by the third round from 7 to 9 November (including the play-offs). Then there will be Round 4 from November 11 to 13 (including the tie-breaker) and Round 5 from November 14 to 16 (including the tie-breaker). The knockout rounds begin with the quarter-finals scheduled for November 17-19 (including tie-breaker), followed by semi-finals from 21-23 (including tie-breaker). The final will be played from 24 to 26 November (including the play-offs).
