A female wolf was shot dead by forest department officials in Bahraich on Sunday, hours after the wild animal attacked a 14-month-old girl in Kandoli village.
According to officials, the aforementioned wolf is believed to be part of a group responsible for a series of deadly attacks, spanning the past two months, in which at least seven people were killed and 30 others were injured.
Officials said most of the attacks were carried out in Kaisarganj tehsil and adjoining areas of Bahraich.
Officials said that on Sunday, the female wolf entered a house and carried the child while she was sleeping next to her family in their home in Kandauli village. Officials added that although the girl’s body was not found, pieces of flesh and blood stains were found some distance from the house.
According to forest department officials, about two hours after the attack, they received information about the presence of the wolf in Pradhanpurva village, which is located approximately four kilometers from Kandauli. After confirming the animal’s location using a drone, a team of forest personnel cordoned off the area. When the wolf tried to escape, officials shot and killed him.
“The injured wolf escaped from the scene, but we found the carcass of the animal some distance from the accident site,” said Ram Singh Yadav, forest officer of Bahraich district.
This marks the third confirmed wolf kill since the Forest Service launched its ongoing operation to track down the pack responsible for the attacks.

However, officials suspect that at least one other coyote may still be roaming the area. “The wolf tracking operation is still ongoing… and has not been cancelled… Wolves usually do not attack alone, and there is a possibility that another animal may be involved,” Yadav said.
Earlier on October 15, three people were injured in a wolf attack. The first reported case in this series dates back to September 9, when a child was killed in Paragpurwa village.
