US President Donald Trump on Sunday promised to pay $2,000 to most Americans, calling it a “dividend” tied to tariff policy, in a flurry of “social truth” posts.

In one of several morning posts, Trump wrote: “Dividends of at least $2,000 per person (not including high-income people!) will be paid to everyone.”

Trump did not say when the payments would be made or specify who would be considered “high income.”

This announcement came as the longest government shutdown in US history continues, forcing many Americans to rely on food banks. The previous day, Trump had attended a lavish Mar-a-Lago dinner, which included filet of beef, truffle dauphinoise, sautéed scallops, and a trio of desserts, including “Trump chocolate cake.”

In defense of his tariff plan, Trump wrote: “People who oppose tariffs are fools! We are now the richest and most respected country in the world, with almost no inflation, and a record stock market price. The 401k rate is the highest it has ever been.”

He added that the United States is “taking in trillions of dollars” and will soon begin repaying its “massive $37 trillion in debt,” citing record investment and factory growth.

Last week, the Supreme Court heard arguments about Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs, a move that three lower courts ruled was illegal. The judges appeared skeptical of the administration’s position.

In response, Trump said: “The President of the United States is allowed (and fully approved by Congress!) to stop all trade with a foreign country… but not allowed to impose a simple tariff on a foreign country, even for national security purposes? That’s not what our great Founders had in mind.”

He went on to claim that companies were “flocking to the US” because of the tariffs, adding in all caps: “WAS THE US SUPREME COURT WASN’T TOLD ABOUT THIS??? WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING???”

Trump recently emphasized affordability heading into the holiday season, claiming that prices have fallen under his leadership. Thanksgiving dinner at Walmart this year is “25 percent less than it was under Sleepy/Cursed Joe Biden,” he said in one post.

The president’s latest comments come days after Democrats scored key election victories across the country.
