SIR starts today
Over 80,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will begin door-to-door surveying for the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of electoral rolls ahead of the Assembly elections in the state. The exercise carried out by the Election Commission (EC) will also begin in eight other states and three union territories from today.
TMC rallies against SIR
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee are expected to lead a padayatra in Kolkata against the implementation of SIR in the state. The ruling Transitional Military Council warned that the removal of any “real” voters’ names from the revised electoral list would be met with protest.
The procession is scheduled to start around 1:30 pm from the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar on Red Road, and is scheduled to reach its peak at Jorasanko Thakurbari, the birthplace of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
